About Albufera Natural Park

Albufera Natural Park encompasses a large freshwater lagoon separated from the Mediterranean Sea by a thin strip of sand dunes and reed beds. Spanning approximately 21,000 hectares, it is one of Spain’s most important wetlands, hosting a diverse array of habitats including marshes, rice paddies, dunes, and forests. The park is internationally recognized as a Ramsar wetland of importance, especially for migratory birds such as herons, flamingos, and various species of ducks. Albufera's ecology supports vital breeding grounds for fish and birds, making it a key site for wildlife observation and environmental education. The history of the area is deeply intertwined with traditional irrigation farming, especially rice cultivation, which dates back several centuries and shapes the landscape and local culture. Recreation opportunities focus on birdwatching, boating, hiking, cycling, and sampling Valencian cuisine, particularly paella, which originated in this region. Visitors can explore the park via boat tours on wooden llaüts, scenic walking paths along the lagoon's edge, and visit the village of El Palmar, famous for its gastronomy and traditional architecture. The park’s proximity to Valencia makes it a popular destination for nature lovers, photographers, and families seeking peaceful outdoor experiences within easy reach of the city.
